Coping Thoughts

Making positive statements to ourselves encourages us and helps us cope through difficult times. Anyone can say encouraging words and be their own personal coach. We can use those experiences to encourage ourselves through current challenges.
Using mindfulness in a particular moment to first slow down, take a breath, relax your muscles and then make statements like the following can really help. Memorize the ones best for you:
  • Stop. Slow down and breathe. I will get through this
  • This will pass - it is difficult and uncomfortable right now but it is only temporary
  • I may feel anxious, angry or sad but I can still deal with this
  • I’ve gotten through other things that were hard and I can do it again
  • My mind and body feel bad: it’s a normal reaction; It really will pass
  • These are just feelings; they won’t last for very long and they will go away
  • If I endure this discomfort now, it will make me stronger and better able to cope in the future
  • I don’t need to rush, I can take things slowly
  • I have survived before and I will survive now
  • I feel this way because of my past experiences, but I am safe right now
  • It’s okay to feel this way, it’s a normal reaction
  • Right now, I am not in danger. Right now, I’m safe
  • Thoughts are just thoughts – they are not necessarily true or factual
  • I will use my coping skills and get through this
  • I will learn from this and it will be easier next time: “Never a failure, always a lesson.”
